Aims

To prevent and reduce the risk of hospital acquired infections and maintaining proper hygiene

STERILIZATION OF AMBU BAG AND MASK

Indications

To be performed every time after use.

Equipments

  • Gloves.
  • Face mask.
  • A Container to immerse or soak the Ambu bags and masks.
  • 2% gluteraldehyde solution (Cidex).
  • A clean cloth: To dry the parts of hand ventilation bags.

Procedure

  1. Wash hands properly.
  2. Wear gloves and face mask to protect and reduce the chemical irritation.
  3. Disassemble all the parts of the ambu bags.
  4. Prior to disinfection, manual cleaning with warm water and soap is necessary to remove the debris or soiling.
  5. Immerse or soak all the parts of the ambu bag in a 2% gluteraldehyde solution (Cidex) in a container for 4 - 6 hours.
  6. Rinse all parts thoroughly in clean water.
  7. Make sure all parts are properly cleaned and dry before reassembling.
  8. After the disinfection process, ambu bags should be checked and kept in plastic bags.

STETHOSCOPE HYGIENE

Responsible

Doctors and nursing staff.

Procedure

  • All stethoscopes are to be wiped off with 70 % alcohol everyday.
  • All stethoscopes are to be wiped off with 70 % alcohol between patients.

Hand disinfection liquid can be used, if 70 % alcohol is not at access.
If possible, it is to prefer that all sick newborns have their own stethoscope, at easy access bedside. These stethoscopes are to be wiped off with 70 % alcohol once a day.
